First runs in 2024: Done.
The first two races of the year are in the books. Last week, I hit the road locally amidst a summery 25°C. Thankfully, I opted for the 7k instead of a longer distance. The day before, I scouted the route on my bike and was surprised by the steep incline at the start of the run. It was in the back of my mind the whole time, but seeing it and experiencing it on my bike, that was something different. I had registered for this race in 2023 but sat it out, feeling underprepared. Judging by the state of my legs after those 7k, it was definitely the right call.
Today marked the second race in Munich: a 10k. The lead-up was marked by colder, wetter, and gloomier weather. Conditions that would test anyone's resolve on a training run at home. Yet, with the race looming, my mindset was clear: I'd paid for it, so I was going to try to run it. For 9.8km, Munich's weather showcased its milder side, albeit still 20°C cooler than the week before, with a brisk wind. Nevertheless, patches of blue sky emerged, and the sun broke through as well. Except for the final 200m, when a sudden downpour of rain and sleet challenged me to sprint to the finish, all the while reminding the half-marathoners: "You're only halfway there."
